Of Asian origin. It belongs to the genus Cucurbita and to the family Cucurbitaceae.
Annual plant, of indeterminate growth and creeping load, main root axonomorfa, cylindrical and thick stem with rough, rough surface and with tendrils, leaf webbed, large limb with glabrous bundle and rough underside. The flower is monoecious, solitary, axillary, large and flared and the fruit is fleshy, unilocular pepónide with white-yellow seeds.
The main producing countries are China, India, Ukraine, the United States and Egypt.
