Native to Asia. It belongs to the family Chenopodiaceae and to the genus Spinacea.
The plant in a first phase forms a rosette and later emits the stem. It presents pivotal root, little branched and of superficial development, erect stem, leaves caulíferas and petioles, conívous petiole and often red in its base and exist masculine, feminine and hermaphrodite plants.
Its cultivation has very good expectations of future, especially for industry and the countries more producers are China, Japan and the United States.
