Of Asian origin. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and to the genus Glycine.

It is an annual herbaceous with a powerful root system with nodules, rigid and branched stem tending to cover, alternate and composite leaves, inflorescences amariposadas white or purple and the fruit is a pod dehiscente with seeds rich in oil and protein.

It is one of the most expanded crops worldwide due to the demand of the food industry and, the United States is the largest producer followed by Brazil and Argentina.
