Originally from India. It belongs to the Compositae family and to the genus Lactuca.
It is an annual plant, autogamous, with pivotal root, short and with ramifications, leaves in rosette and unfolded at the beginning, cylindrical stem and branched, chapters yellow floral in clusters or corimbos and seeds provided with a feathery vilano.
Its cultivation has increased in the last years, due to the diversification of varieties and the increase of the fourth range and the countries more producers are China, United States and Spain.
