Originally from Central America. Its scientific name is Zea mays, of the family Gramineae.

It is a robust annual plant with fasciculated roots, the stem is simple and erect of high length, paralellinervias leaves embraced to the stem and with vellosidades in the beam and sharp ends, inflorescence masculine (panicle) and feminine (espádices) within the same plant and the fruit is a caryopsid.

It is one of the staples most important for the human being and the countries most producers are the United States and China.
