Native to tropical and subtropical Asian areas. It belongs to the family Solanaceae and to the genus Solanum.
Herbaceous plant with a powerful and deep root system, strong stems, large and long leaves of petiole, with nerves with spines and back with villi, violet flower with thorns and the fruit is an elongated or globose berry, black, purple, white, mottled purple or green, with small yellow seeds.
The most producing countries are China, India and Turkey.
