Native to the South American tropical zone. It belongs to the Convolvulaceae family and the genus Convolvulus.
Herbaceous plant, with creeping behavior, roots that produce false nutrient-rich tubers, cylindrical stem, heart-shaped leaves, violet or white inflorescences of the bipartite type, and the fruit is a round capsule. Undemanding cultivation that is intended for food and as a raw material for confectionery and alcoholic beverages.
The most producing countries are Uganda, China and Nigeria.
