Alfalfa comes from Asia Minor and the South Caucasus. It belongs to the legume family and the genus Medicago.
It is a perennial, lively and erect plant with a developed pivoting root, thin and erect stem, trifoliate leaves, blue flower with inflorescences in clusters and the fruit is an indehiscent legume with 2-6 seeds.
Of interest as a natural source of fiber, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and as a reducer of erosion and of some pests and phytopathies.
The most producing countries are the United States and Argentina.
