Native to Asia. It belongs to the family Vitaceae and to the genus Vitis.
It is a woody plant that presents a root that becomes imposing with the years, with a long juvenile period, stem that grows up to 6 m, leaves deciduous, green and irregularly toothed. The fruit is a globose berry that is arranged in clusters and consumed fresh.
It is currently cultivated in all regions with a temperate climate, with China being the main producing country with 9.7 million tons.
